Google Ads aimed at booked calls — not cheaper clicks

Search campaigns built around enquiries and calls, with tracking parity before we scale spend.

The numbers we steer by

The leak

Clicks that don’t become conversations

A cheaper click is not a booked call. These are the failure modes we fix before anyone raises the budget.

Cheap clicks

The auction is full of jobs, parts and people who will never call. Broad match without negatives buys traffic that looks efficient and never books a conversation.

Weak landings

The ad promises a call or a form. The page talks about the company. Intent dies between the click and the enquiry, and the cheap click is wasted.

Broken conversion tracking

Ads optimises to a page view, a duplicated form or a tag that does not mean a conversation. Spend follows the wrong signal, then the budget goes up.

Full scope

The full Google Ads scope we run for service businesses

Precise workstreams — not a vague “we run your ads” promise. We go as deep as the account needs after the Diagnostic.

01

Account & campaign architecture (search-first)

  • Search campaigns first. Display, Demand Gen and Performance Max only if they are scoped — never as the default.
  • A campaign map tied to the services that book calls, not one mixed campaign for the whole business.
  • Brand, non-brand and competitor structures kept apart, so brand cost does not disguise non-brand cost per lead.
  • Shared budgets only where they do not starve a service that actually books.
  • Names a human can audit. No leftover agency spaghetti from the last login.

02

Keywords, match types, negatives, search-term mining

  • Match types chosen on purpose: exact and phrase where intent is tight; broad only with a negative list that can carry it.
  • Account and campaign negatives reviewed on a cadence, not a one-off spreadsheet.
  • Search-term mining that promotes queries which book, and excludes queries that never will.
  • Close variants watched, so a junk query does not hide inside a phrase match and look “efficient”.
  • A written negative policy the next person on the account can follow.

03

Geos, schedules, ad group hygiene

  • Geos matched to where the business can actually serve and take a call — not every country left on from setup.
  • Location options set to presence, not interest, unless the brief says otherwise.
  • Ad schedules aligned to when the phone is answered. Overnight spend is a decision, not an accident.
  • One tight theme per ad group, so RSA relevance stays honest and mixed intents are split.
  • Dead ad groups and leftover experiments paused or removed. We do not hoard them.

04

RSA copy & assets aimed at forms/calls

  • Responsive search ads written to the enquiry and the call, not a slogan.
  • Headlines that name the service, the outcome and the next step.
  • Descriptions that say who it is for — and who it is not.
  • Call assets, sitelinks and callouts pointed at the same action as the ad.
  • Pinning used sparingly, so the line the business needs is not randomised away.

05

Landing intent alignment

  • Each ad group lands on a page that answers the query, not the homepage by default.
  • Form, phone number and promise above the fold match the ad.
  • Message match checked: headline, offer and who it is for.
  • We do not rebuild the landing page unless that work is scoped. We flag the mismatch and recommend the fix.
  • A weak page is not scaled just because the click is cheap.

06

Bidding & budget against enquiry/call proxies

  • Bidding strategies chosen against the conversion that means an enquiry or a call, not a click.
  • Budget set so the account can learn without flooding the wrong queries.
  • Cost per lead and booked-call proxies reported together. CPC is context, not the verdict.
  • Bid adjustments only where the data supports them — geos, devices, schedules.
  • We do not chase a ROAS target the account cannot measure.

07

Conversion tracking dependency (no scale on broken measurement)

  • No scale until the primary conversion is a form, a qualified call, or an agreed proxy for a booked conversation.
  • Page views, button clicks and duplicated thank-you hits are not a bidding signal.
  • Google Ads conversions checked against GA4 for the same week, with measurement if that track is in the engagement.
  • Enhanced conversions only when the data is clean enough to help, and never set up so the account double-counts.
  • If tracking is broken, we stop and fix it. We do not buy our way through a bad signal.

08

Query insights shared with SEO

  • Search terms that convert are passed to the SEO workstream as demand proof, not hoarded inside Ads.
  • Queries with volume and no page are flagged as content gaps.
  • Queries that waste spend — and would waste rankings — are named, so organic does not chase them either.
  • One view of intent across paid and organic. Two channels, one lead system.

09

How Ads joins ClickOptimo lead system

  • Ads is one track of the lead system, alongside SEO and measurement — not a separate vendor.
  • Tracking parity is a dependency. Scale waits on the signal.
  • Landing and SEO lessons fed back when a page earns clicks but not calls.
  • The Diagnostic decides whether paid search is the leak, or a supporting track.
  • Reporting is keep, cut or scale against enquiries and booked calls.

Included

What’s included when you engage us for Google Ads

The same discipline, scoped to the engagement — not a vague monthly bundle of “ad management”.

Growth Diagnostic

Free · about 30 minutes

  • A quick read of the search account, the landing path and the conversion signal.
  • Whether cheap clicks, weak landings or broken tracking is the real bottleneck.
  • A clear path: Lead Engine, Retainer, or DIY.

90-Day Lead Engine

When Google Ads is in the scope

  • Search-first rebuild, negatives and tracking parity before the budget is raised.
  • RSA, geo and landing alignment on the services that can book a call.
  • Day-90 decision: continue, adjust, or stop.

Growth Retainer

Ads as a primary or supporting track

  • Ongoing search-term mining, negatives and bid hygiene against lead KPIs.
  • Budget and bidding reviewed against enquiry and call proxies, not a cheaper CPC.
  • Monthly human-reviewed narrative. AI-assisted drafting is fine; the call is not automated.

Boundaries

What we won’t pretend Google Ads can do

Straight limits. If a promise needs a disclaimer the size of the page, it does not belong here.

  • The client pays Google media. Our fee is the management work — never the ad spend, and never bundled in as a surprise.
  • No ROAS guarantees, no “number one” promises, and no invented return if the account cannot measure it.
  • Search-first. Performance Max, Display, Shopping, YouTube and Microsoft Ads are added when they fit your goals. For Meta ads, see social media marketing.
  • No landing-page rebuild unless that work is scoped. We will name the mismatch; we will not redesign the site inside an Ads engagement by default.
  • We do not guarantee a cost per lead, a booked-call volume, or a position.

Process

How Google Ads work runs

After the Diagnostic, work follows the leak — not a fixed pack of campaigns.

1

Diagnose

Read the account, the search terms, the landings and the conversion set. Written gaps, not a slide dump.

2

Structure and negatives

Search-first architecture, match types and a negative list that protects the budget before anyone talks about scaling.

3

Align ads, pages, tracking

RSA and assets aimed at forms and calls. Landings checked for intent. No scale until the conversion means a conversation.

4

Report keep, cut, scale

A decision note on cost per lead and booked-call proxies. Then retain, adjust, or stop. A cheap click is never the verdict.

Fit check

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

We would rather say no in thirty minutes than sell the wrong engagement.

✓ A good fit

  • Service business, roughly $500k–$10M
  • Search demand exists for the services that book calls
  • Will pause scaling until tracking is a real enquiry or call
  • Can give Ads access, and keeps ownership of the account
  • Wants one partner accountable to leads and booked calls

✗ Not a fit

  • “Guarantee the ROAS” or “get us to number one”
  • Mainly after Facebook or Instagram ads (see social media marketing instead)
  • A landing rebuild dressed up as an Ads retainer
  • No willingness to exclude junk queries or fix a broken conversion

Beyond search

Every Google and Microsoft ad format, managed as one account

Search is where most leads start, but it’s rarely the whole story. We run the formats that fit your goals — all tracked to the same conversions and budget.

FAQ

Straight answers before you book

Do you guarantee ROAS, or a number-one ad position?

No. We do not warrant return on ad spend, rank, a cost per lead or a booked-call volume. We commit to search-first structure, negatives, and reporting against enquiries and calls.

Who pays Google for the media?

You do. Media spend stays on your Google Ads invoice. Our fee is the management work, not the clicks, and it is never bundled in as media.

Will you start with Facebook or Instagram?

No, not unless it is scoped in writing. The default for service businesses is search. Meta, Display, Demand Gen or Performance Max only when the brief says so.

Do you rebuild the landing pages?

Not unless that work is scoped. We align intent, and we flag pages that waste clicks. A landing rebuild is a separate decision, not a silent extra inside an Ads engagement.

Can you scale spend before tracking is clean?

You can. You should not. If the conversion is a page view or a double-fired form, the algorithm buys more of the wrong thing. Tracking parity comes before a higher budget.

How does Google Ads join SEO and the Lead Engine?

Query insights are shared with SEO. Ads is often a track inside the 90-Day Lead Engine, on the same definition of a lead as measurement. A Growth Retainer keeps the account honest once the sprint ends.
